Conservation work begins on churches in Northern Cyprus
Conservation work has officially commenced at the Saint George church in Mezere, Karavas. Under the same contract, restoration will also be performed on the church of Saint Irene. These projects are funded by the local community and the European Union, with technical guidance provided by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Sotiris Ktoris, co-chairman of the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, stated that the initiative aims to serve as a bridge for reconciliation. Meanwhile, ongoing restoration work continues at the Panagia Faneromeni church in Gastria, Karpasia. Additionally, emergency rescue work has recently been completed at the Panagia Melissa church on the northern slopes of the Pentadaktylos mountain range. This rescue project involved a collaborative effort between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot architects, engineers, and builders to prevent the total loss of the monument.
