Donald Trump discusses Iran and Taiwan during official visit to China
During a two-day visit to Beijing, U.S. President Donald Trump held discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding the Middle East, Taiwan, and trade relations. Trump stated he would consider a 20-year suspension of Iran's nuclear program if Tehran's commitment is genuine, while simultaneously noting that U.S. military operations against Iran could potentially resume to complete "cleanup work." He confirmed that the U.S. agreed to a ceasefire with Iran primarily due to pressure from Pakistan. Trump also noted that President Xi expressed strong opposition to Iran acquiring nuclear weapons and agreed to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, the U.S. President claimed that Beijing has pledged not to send military equipment to Iran and plans to purchase U.S. oil and agricultural products. China's foreign ministry has called for a comprehensive ceasefire in the region and the immediate reopening of maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz, which has been largely closed since the onset of conflict on February 28, 2025.
