Escalating hostilities between the United States and Iran following renewed strikes
Following the downing of a U.S. Apache helicopter, the United States conducted a second consecutive night of airstrikes targeting Iranian military surveillance, communication systems, and air defense sites. U.S. President Donald Trump warned that further bombing would occur if Iran does not agree to a peace deal, though he indicated the current wave of strikes would conclude shortly. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have struck 18 U.S. targets, including bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, and reported firing on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. While Iran asserted that the Strait of Hormuz is closed, U.S. Central Command denied this, stating that commercial shipping continues. A dispute has emerged regarding a potential communication between the two parties, as President Trump claimed Iranian officials requested a ceasefire, while Iranian state officials vehemently denied any such contact. Israel’s involvement in the U.S. strikes has been explicitly denied by the U.S. administration. Global markets reacted with oil prices rising by nearly $3 following the threat of escalation.
