UN peacekeeping official meets with President Christodoulides to discuss buffer zone tensions
On April 21, 2026, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix met with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia to discuss the Cyprus problem and recent security concerns. Prior to the meeting, Lacroix toured the Pyla buffer zone area via helicopter with UNFICYP head Khassim Diagne to assess current conditions. President Christodoulides emphasized that maintaining stability and ensuring appropriate conditions on the ground in the buffer zone are essential prerequisites for resuming formal negotiations. Lacroix reaffirmed the UN's commitment to de-escalating tensions and maintaining calm, highlighting the critical role of UNFICYP. While Cypriot officials characterized the situation as involving violations by occupation forces, the UN focus remains on facilitating a peaceful environment for the political process. The delegation included key diplomatic representatives, such as negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and Ambassador Maria Michael. Lacroix also engaged with youth from both communities and the diplomatic corps during his two-day visit.
