European Economic and Social Committee approves proposal for a European Centre of Clinical Excellence

On April 15, 2026, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) unanimously approved a proposal to establish a European Centre of Clinical Excellence. The proposal was submitted by the Cypriot Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambidis, as part of the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The initiative was previously presented at an informal meeting of health ministers in February 2026. The EESC, acting as an advisory body to the EU, passed the motion with 108 votes in favor and none against. The proposed centre aims to increase public confidence in clinical evaluations and support high-quality, consistent decision-making processes. Additionally, the project is designed to strengthen the European Union's influence in global pharmaceutical policy. By implementing this center, officials hope to establish a more cohesive, patient-centered healthcare system across the EU. The Ministry of Health of Cyprus stated that this approval reflects the country's strategic efforts in shaping European health policies.
