Diplomatic activity and UN initiatives regarding the Cyprus problem

Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that a new UN initiative to address the Cyprus problem, initiated by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has already begun. The Greek Cypriot leadership expressed readiness to participate in an enlarged meeting to resume negotiations based on UN Security Council resolutions. Conversely, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman suggested a new initiative might commence in July following the conclusion of the Cyprus EU presidency. Erhurman, who recently met with UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, previously criticized the proposal for an enlarged meeting, arguing it sidelines the Turkish Cypriot side. Separately, Erhurman met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara to discuss regional security and the presence of foreign military assets. Meanwhile, CTP leader Sila Usar Incirli emphasized the need for a federal solution during her own discussions with UN officials. UN Under-Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix is expected to visit the island soon to hold further meetings with both sides.
