Widower pensioners announce protests over pension rights
Widower members of the pensioners' organization EKYSY are planning protests outside the Presidential Palace and the Ministry of Labour. The dispute concerns the exclusion of widowers from receiving survivor pensions if their spouses passed away before January 1, 2018. During a meeting on Friday, General Secretary Eftychios Papamichael briefed members on recent discussions held with political parties and the Minister of Labour. EKYSY sent a formal letter to the Minister on April 7, 2026, requesting a definitive government stance on the issue. The organization reached a unanimous decision to coordinate with the SEK and PASYDY pensioner unions to form a unified front. Members expressed their determination to escalate actions using all legal means if the government fails to provide an immediate and positive response. The protesters argue that the current policy constitutes a persistent injustice that must be addressed.
