Cyprus parliament to convene for key legislative session

The plenary session of the Cypriot House of Representatives is scheduled for Thursday, April 23, following a three-week extension of its proceedings and one month before the parliamentary elections. The agenda includes three legislative referrals, a bill harmonizing national legislation with the EU Migration and Asylum Pact, and proposals regarding parliamentary assistants. The referrals concern the law on the promotion of renewable energy sources, specifically regarding the compensation for surplus energy generated by self-consumers, and the elementary education law concerning student supervision. The bill on refugees aims to align the Republic of Cyprus with the new EU Pact, which becomes effective in June 2026. Deputy Minister of Migration, Nikolas Ioannidis, stated that the bill introduces stricter border controls and faster asylum procedures. Additionally, a legislative proposal by AKEL MPs Giorgos Loukaidis, Aristos Damianou, Marina Nikolaou, and Valentinos Fakontis will be considered. The session addresses significant regulatory, energy, and migration matters prior to the upcoming electoral period.
