Cypriot parliament plenary session agenda for April 23
The plenary session of the Cypriot parliament is scheduled for Thursday, April 23, following a three-week extension of its legislative work, just one month before the upcoming parliamentary elections. The agenda includes three presidential referrals regarding the Promotion and Encouragement of the Use of Renewable Energy Sources, which concerns compensation for surplus electricity, and the Elementary Education Law regarding student supervision. A key item is the Refugee Law bill, which aims to align Cypriot legislation with the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum before its June 2026 effective date. Deputy Minister of Migration Nicholas Ioannides stated that the bill introduces stricter border controls and faster asylum procedures to create a cohesive migration framework. Additionally, the session will address legislative proposals concerning parliamentary staff. Specifically, AKEL deputies George Loukaides, Aristos Damianou, Marina Nicolaou, and Valentinos Fakontis have submitted proposals for amendments. This legislative activity occurs within the context of preparations for the forthcoming national elections.
