Cyprus Shipping Chamber supports global maritime decarbonization efforts
The Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) has officially endorsed a joint position by seven major international maritime organizations ahead of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) MEPC 84 session. Industry bodies, including BIMCO, the Cruise Lines International Association, the International Chamber of Shipping, Intercargo, Interferry, Intertanko, and the World Shipping Council, are calling for a unified global framework for decarbonization. Following the postponement of greenhouse gas regulations in October 2025, the sector is pushing for member states to agree on a clear regulatory path to ensure industry stability. The CSC warned that a fragmented approach, involving regional or unilateral measures, could increase operational costs and weaken global competitiveness. They emphasized that any new regulations must be based on real data, ensuring equal treatment for all fuel types and technologies while prioritizing safety and accessibility. The industry reaffirmed its commitment to the 2023 IMO greenhouse gas reduction strategy. Officials noted that the IMO remains the necessary authority to provide the regulatory certainty required for investments in sustainable marine fuels.
