Coastal erosion reported along the Oroklini seafront

Oroklini deputy mayor Neophytos Fakonti and Larnaca technical services head Neophytoula Angelidou reported severe coastal erosion and ground subsidence along the Oroklini seafront. The issue has prompted concerns regarding public safety and infrastructure integrity along the promenade. Previous mitigation efforts included the installation of breakwaters and the removal of a vertical jetty near the Lebay Hotel. Despite these interventions, officials stated that erosion persists across the entire length of the walkway, regardless of whether the structure sits on piles or foundations. The municipality has engaged two consultants and is coordinating with the Public Works Department to identify the root cause of the problem. Authorities have been in contact with the Public Works Department since September 2025 to discuss solutions. The local government has implemented safety measures, though officials report that public compliance remains an issue requiring frequent monitoring. The situation is currently classified by local authorities as a national-level problem requiring urgent, evidence-based intervention.
