Former Formula 1 driver and Paralympic athlete Alex Zanardi dies at 59

Alessandro 'Alex' Zanardi, born October 23, 1966, in Bologna, Italy, has died at the age of 59. Zanardi competed in Formula 1 during the 1990s for Jordan, Minardi, and Lotus, later returning with Williams in 1999. He achieved significant success in the American CART series, winning back-to-back championships in 1997 and 1998. In September 2001, he suffered a high-speed crash at the Lausitzring circuit in Germany, which resulted in the amputation of both his legs. Following his recovery, he pivoted to handcycling and became a decorated Paralympian, winning four gold and two silver medals across the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
