Russia resumes large-scale drone strikes on Ukraine following ceasefire expiry
A three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, brokered by the United States, expired on May 11, 2026. Following the expiration, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russia launched over 200 attack drones across the country. In Kyiv, authorities issued the first air raid alert since May 8, as a drone crashed into a 16-story apartment building in the Obolonskyi district, causing a fire. Regional officials in Dnipropetrovsk confirmed at least one death and several injuries due to continued shelling and drone strikes. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed its air defense systems intercepted 27 Ukrainian drones over the Belgorod, Voronezh, and Rostov regions overnight. Both sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire terms throughout the three-day period. Despite the US-led effort to pause hostilities, military engagements continued across several front-line regions, including Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Kherson. Local authorities report ongoing damage to residential buildings, infrastructure, and civilian casualties.
