Recent fire incidents and civil protection updates in Cyprus
Several fire incidents were reported across Cyprus in mid-May 2026. On May 12, a fire at 14:56 in Lympia, Nicosia district, affected 15 decares of wild vegetation, while another blaze in Kalo Chorio, Larnaca, on May 14, destroyed five hectares and 100 hay bales. Additionally, an early morning fire on May 14 at a club in Lakatamia caused extensive damage, and a fire at an abandoned restaurant kiosk near Governor’s Beach, Limassol, occurred on the night of May 12. Investigations into the causes of these fires are ongoing. In a broader context, the President of the Republic held a meeting to strengthen the National Civil Protection Mechanism. Cyprus has increased its aerial firefighting fleet to 14 aircraft and is implementing new emergency systems, including the NG 112 system and remote fire monitoring centers, to enhance prevention for the 2026 fire season.
