Recent fire incidents and state wildfire preparedness measures in Cyprus
On May 12, 2026, a wooden kiosk near Governor's Beach in Limassol was completely destroyed by fire around 9:00 PM. Police and the Fire Service are investigating the causes, with further examinations scheduled by the Electrical and Mechanical Services. In a separate incident on the same day, a fire broke out at 2:56 PM in Lympia, Nicosia district, burning 15 decares of wild vegetation and dry grass before being controlled by 4:40 PM. This operation involved 16 Forest Department personnel and 12 firefighters supported by local residents. Additionally, a refuse truck fire occurred in Limassol at 9:28 PM, caused by short-circuiting batteries found in waste. Separately, the President of Cyprus held a high-level meeting to review the national wildfire preparedness strategy. The country has secured 13 aircraft for the 2026 season and is launching a new emergency warning system (NG 112) along with rural surveillance cameras to enhance prevention efforts.
