Series of fire incidents reported across Cyprus
Multiple fire incidents were reported across Cyprus on May 15 and 16, 2026. On Friday, May 15, at approximately 20:50, a fire broke out in a second-floor apartment in the Ayios Eleftherios housing estate in Latsia, Nicosia, forcing the rescue of a young person from a balcony and the evacuation of an elderly neighbor; the 36-year-old tenant and her six-year-old child were not present. Additionally, three consecutive fires occurred on May 16 in the Paliometocho and Dhenia areas of Nicosia province, damaging vegetation and property, with causes linked to sparks from tools and agricultural work. On Saturday, May 16, at 13:51, a fire in the Vyzakeri area of Mosfiloti, Larnaca, was controlled by forestry and local fire units. Finally, a car belonging to a 28-year-old man caught fire in Limassol around 02:00 on Saturday. Authorities have cordoned off these scenes and investigations into the causes of all incidents are ongoing. High winds have prompted officials to issue warnings regarding fire safety and to enforce a ban on hot work.
