Four individuals under medical surveillance in Italy following contact with hantavirus victim
Italian health authorities have placed four individuals under medical surveillance as a precaution after they had contact with a 69-year-old woman who died from hantavirus. The woman had briefly boarded a KLM flight from Johannesburg, intended for Copenhagen, before being removed by South African authorities due to her illness. While sources differ on the flight's final destination, citing both Copenhagen and Amsterdam, it is confirmed that the four individuals in Italy—two Italians and two foreign nationals—were identified as potential contacts. The Italian residents are located in the regions of Calabria, Tuscany, Veneto, and Campania. The two Italian men, aged 24 and 25, have been ordered into a 45-day mandatory quarantine in designated rooms with private facilities, masks, and daily temperature checks. The remaining two individuals are under voluntary medical monitoring. None of the four have shown symptoms, and officials consider the risk of transmission to be very low. Reports also mention the deceased woman may have previously traveled on the cruise ship MV Hondius.
