Hantavirus health surveillance in Italy following flight contact with fatality

Italian health authorities have placed four individuals under medical surveillance after they came into contact with a woman who died from hantavirus. The deceased had previously traveled on the MV Hondius cruise ship and was briefly on a KLM flight from Johannesburg. The four individuals currently under observation reside in the Italian regions of Calabria, Tuscany, Veneto, and Campania. None of them have shown symptoms, and the quarantine measures are strictly precautionary, involving isolation and daily temperature monitoring for a period ranging from 40 to 45 days. Additionally, an Argentine tourist in Messina is undergoing tests for a hantavirus strain after arriving from an endemic region. A separate French woman is receiving critical care in a Paris hospital for hantavirus-related heart and lung complications. While some early reports mentioned a British national in Milan, subsequent sources clarified that several Italian citizens are the primary focus of the domestic Italian surveillance protocol.
