Cyprus implements water conservation measures and expands desalination infrastructure
Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou announced an initiative to distribute two million tap aerators and one million shower flow reducers to households to combat water scarcity. Some sources report the distribution of 150,000 sets, linked to fuel purchases at EKO gas stations. The initiative aims to reduce daily per capita water consumption, currently at 140 litres, above the EU average of 125 litres. In addition to demand-side management, the government is expanding supply through desalination. A fourth mobile desalination unit is set to become operational at Garyllis in Limassol, joining units in Moni, Kissonerga, and Limassol port. Four permanent desalination plants are also planned for eastern Limassol, Ayia Napa-Ayia Thekla, Polis Chrysochous, and Dhekelia. Furthermore, the Larnaca reclaimed water project will add 1.07 million cubic metres of water annually, increasing local supply by 33%. The state aims to cover total water demand through desalination by 2027.
