Funeral of veteran sports journalist Demetris Demetriou to be held Wednesday

Demetris Demetriou, a prominent sports journalist and former vice-president of the Cyprus Sports Journalists Association (EAK), passed away on May 11, 2026, at the age of 65 following a battle with cancer. His funeral will take place on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 15:00 at the Holy Church of Saint Nektarios in Platy Aglantzia, with the body lying in state from 14:30. The burial will be held at the Aglantzia Municipal Cemetery. Demetriou served as sports editor-in-chief at the newspaper Politis from 1999 until 2020 and was a member of the Union of Cyprus Journalists since 1985. In accordance with his wishes and those of his family, no condolences will be accepted at the church. Instead, those wishing to offer support are encouraged to contribute to the EAK Solidarity Fund for Sports Journalists, an initiative Demetriou himself proposed. The Board of the EAK will attend the funeral in its entirety. Professional associations, including PASP and the Union of Cyprus Journalists, have publicly honored his legacy of integrity and mentorship.
