Uncertainty surrounds Limassol affordable housing project
The affordable rental housing project in Limassol, a joint initiative between the municipality and the Cyprus Land Development Organisation (Koag), faces potential delays due to emerging financial and planning disagreements. Initiated a decade ago with an original target of 600 apartments, the project has currently completed only one 36-unit building in Ayios Nikolaos. Four additional buildings are expected to commence construction within the next 12 months, bringing the total to 138 units. Future phases, including 180 apartments in Ayios Ioannis and 280 units in Phase C, are now under review. A primary conflict involves municipal plots on Goethe Street in Ayios Ioannis, where rising land values have prompted the municipality to demand fair compensation for the land earmarked for social housing demolition. Both parties have publicly affirmed their commitment to the project, acknowledging the city's severe housing shortage. However, the decade-long timeline and shifting economic conditions have necessitated a re-evaluation of the next stages of development.
