Update on hantavirus health status and containment measures in Europe
As of May 11, 2026, European health authorities are monitoring a low-risk hantavirus outbreak originating from the cruise ship MV Hondius in the South Atlantic. French Minister of Health Stephanie Rist reported that while one patient repatriated to France is in critical condition in a Parisian intensive care unit, four others have tested negative. In France, 22 contact cases have been identified and are under medical observation. The government has implemented a 42-day isolation period for contacts, subject to review every two weeks, though no mandatory masks or travel restrictions are currently imposed. Meanwhile, 14 Spanish citizens were repatriated to a military hospital in Madrid, and 22 passengers were quarantined in the United Kingdom. Worldwide, the World Health Organization has reported seven confirmed cases and two suspected cases across 19 countries. European ministries emphasize that human-to-human transmission is rare, as the virus typically spreads through contact with rodents.
