International Nurses Day marked in Cyprus with calls for sector improvements
On May 12, International Nurses Day was observed across Cyprus, centering on the theme 'Empowered Nurses Save Lives'. The State Health Services Organization (OKYPY) recognized its workforce of over 3,500 nurses, emphasizing that their empowerment is a strategic priority achieved through training and participation in decision-making. Simultaneously, nursing unions and associations, including PASYNO, PASYDY, and PASYNM, highlighted significant operational challenges. These organizations noted that while the contribution of nursing staff is vital, the sector faces persistent issues such as staff shortages and outdated infrastructure. They collectively called on the state to move beyond symbolic gestures and implement concrete policies. Specific demands included improved working conditions, increased staffing levels, and a greater role for nurses in healthcare policymaking. The unions stressed that these measures are essential to ensure patient safety and the long-term sustainability of the public health system.
