Detention of Global Sumud Flotilla activists
Two activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla, Tiago Avila and Saif Abu Keshek, were detained by Israeli authorities in international waters off the coast of Crete. UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese addressed the incident during an event in Athens, calling for public attention to the case and criticizing the legality of the detention. The two men are currently held in an Israeli maximum-security prison and have initiated a hunger strike. Their legal representative, the human rights organization Adalah, claims the detainees are subjected to isolation, constant lighting in their cells, and the use of blindfolds during movement. While the activists face legal charges, their supporters and Adalah describe the conditions of their confinement as a violation of legal and human rights principles. A letter written by Tiago Avila to his daughter was reported as part of the public narrative surrounding their detention. The Israeli government maintains its legal position, while international advocates continue to demand their release.
