Turkish Cypriot restaurant association requests urgent resolution to meat import crisis
The Turkish Cypriot Restaurant Association, known as Res-Bir, has issued an appeal for an immediate solution to the ongoing meat supply crisis in the occupied areas. The association proposes allowing meat imports from the free market or directly from the Republic of Cyprus. The organization reported that long-standing disputes between livestock farmers, butchers, trade unions, and the local agricultural authorities have exacerbated market instability. Despite previous government promises to establish a cooperative for the distribution of affordable, high-quality meat, no such system has been implemented. Res-Bir highlighted that both business owners and citizens are severely impacted by current supply shortages and price hikes. The association noted that consumers are already bypassing local markets to purchase cheaper meat from the government-controlled areas of the Republic of Cyprus. Professionals in the restaurant industry are currently struggling to maintain business operations due to these economic pressures. Recent protests have also taken place in the region in opposition to certain meat import policies.
