European Commission invites Taliban representatives to Brussels for technical migration talks
The European Commission, in coordination with the Swedish Ministry of Justice, has sent an official letter to the de facto authorities in Afghanistan inviting them to Brussels for technical-level discussions regarding the return of migrants. This initiative follows a request from 20 European Union and Schengen-associated countries seeking to facilitate the repatriation of individuals, specifically those posing security threats or convicted of crimes. The talks are a continuation of previous technical contacts held in Kabul in January 2026. A European Commission spokesperson, Markus Lammer, confirmed the invitation and emphasized that these operational contacts do not imply any formal recognition of the Taliban regime. While the European Union coordinates the process, the spokesperson clarified that the Commission is not responsible for screening individuals for return, as this remains the prerogative of the member states. In 2025, Afghan nationals represented the largest group of asylum seekers in the European Union. Despite the logistical progress, the potential visit continues to raise ethical and diplomatic concerns regarding the dialogue with the Taliban.
