President Christodoulides discusses potential UN initiative for Cyprus problem
President Nikos Christodoulides announced that UN Secretary-General António Guterres has launched a new initiative following a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The President expressed optimism that this effort could lead to a concrete solution plan before the end of Guterres' term in December, though he clarified he was not referring to arbitration. Christodoulides emphasized that the Greek Cypriot side remains committed to a bizonal, bicommunal federation and rejects any two-state solution. UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin is expected to visit Cyprus in early June to prepare for an informal expanded conference anticipated this summer. While the President noted the importance of the UN process, he acknowledged that Turkey remains the key factor in any potential breakthrough. He also reiterated that while backchannel contacts are occurring, no public agreement on minor issues has been reached between the two sides so far. Various political commentators and opposition figures, including Averof Neofytou, have questioned the concrete parameters of this potential timeline.
