Residential solar energy curtailment in Cyprus increases
Data from the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) reveals that residential solar installations experienced between 15 and 17 production cut-offs between April 4 and May 4, 2026. Monitoring of 20 groups of installations showed that 14 groups faced 16 cut-offs, five experienced 17, and one experienced 15. The Distribution System Operator implements these measures to maintain grid stability when electricity production significantly exceeds demand. Curtailment occurs frequently due to low consumption patterns, often on consecutive days or every other day. These procedures are common in European countries with similar grid limitations, though they could be mitigated by energy storage or infrastructure upgrades. With the number of residential solar units expected to reach 100,000, officials warn these interruptions may become more frequent. Owners have the legal option to convert to a zero-export arrangement to bypass these restrictions.
