Larnaca Municipality updates policy on private use of public squares
The Larnaca Municipal Council recently reviewed three applications from private businesses for events at Zouhouri Square, some of which proposed restricting public access through fencing and ticketed entry. While the municipality has historically permitted such practices on a temporary basis, the council majority decided that this approach can no longer continue. The council clarified that it has not officially cancelled any event applications, but it now requires that all approved events remain open to the public without fencing or admission fees. Organisers are permitted to recover costs through the sale of food and drinks, provided they obtain the necessary permits. While the municipality describes these previous allowances as temporary, some event organizers argue they have successfully held similar ticketed events at the location in the past. This change in policy has sparked public debate on social media, with some residents expressing criticism. One specific event organizer ultimately cancelled their plans after refusing to adhere to the new conditions.
