Released political refugee sleeps outside Larnaca Court seeking readmission to prison
A 39-year-old Iranian man, who is a recognized political refugee, has been sleeping on the pavement outside the Larnaca Court for two consecutive nights following his release from prison. The man stated he feels safer inside the prison than outside. Authorities reported that he has a history of psychological issues and has been hospitalized at Athalassa Hospital on at least two prior occasions. Police were also previously involved with him regarding incidents involving property damage. On Tuesday, shortly before noon, he was moved to the Larnaca Police Directorate for humanitarian assessment. Senior Social Welfare Services officer Eftychios Hadjichristodoulou confirmed that the man is a known case to their department. A social welfare officer was deployed to assess his immediate medical and housing needs. Plans involve a standard rehabilitation program for released prisoners, including potential medical examination, financial assistance, and temporary accommodation if hospitalization is deemed unnecessary.
