Limassol authorities seek court order to evacuate unsafe building
The Limassol District Local Government Organization (EOA) plans to file an application at the Limassol District Court on May 18, 2024, to secure an evacuation order for the Seagate apartment building on Vasileos Georgiou I Avenue. The building has been deemed unsafe following a partial collapse of another residential structure in the Yermasoyia tourist area on April 11, which resulted in two fatalities. Residents of the Seagate building were originally issued a three-day evacuation notice that expired on April 20. District governor Yiannis Tsouloftas explained that the delay in legal action was due to the complexity of identifying all apartment owners and ensuring they received formal notification. This incident is the first of its kind handled by the EOA. In the aftermath of the April collapse, authorities inspected buildings and placed warning signs on 36 structures identified as potentially dangerous across the Limassol district. Meanwhile, the police investigation into the fatal building collapse is nearing completion, and the case file will soon be submitted to the Attorney General for a legal opinion.
