Cyprus Department of Fisheries issues guidelines following increased dolphin sightings
The Cyprus Department of Fisheries and Marine Research has reported an increase in sightings of dolphins and other cetaceans in local waters. Officials characterize these occurrences as positive indicators of the marine environment's health. Due to their status as protected species, the department has issued strict operational guidelines for all vessel operators. Requirements include reducing speed, avoiding abrupt maneuvers, and maintaining a safe distance from the animals. Operators must refrain from creating loud noises, playing music, or engaging in any activity that could disturb the mammals' natural behaviors, such as resting or breeding. Furthermore, harassing or feeding these animals is explicitly prohibited under national and European legislation. If dolphins approach a vessel, captains are instructed to maintain a steady course and low speed without attempting interaction. These measures aim to protect the biodiversity and natural heritage of Cyprus's coastal waters.
