Department of Fisheries and Marine Research issues guidelines following increased dolphin sightings in Cyprus

The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research in Cyprus has reported a rise in sightings of dolphin pods and other cetaceans in local waters. Officials characterized these occurrences as a positive indicator for the marine environment. To protect these animals, the department has issued strict navigation guidelines for operators of recreational, fishing, and other vessels. Operators are instructed to reduce speed, maintain a safe distance, and avoid abrupt changes in direction or speed. It is strictly prohibited to chase, surround, cross the path of, feed, or create loud noises near the animals, as these behaviors can cause stress and disrupt natural activities such as reproduction and resting. The department emphasized that cetaceans are protected species under both national and European law. Vessel operators are advised to maintain a steady course and avoid any interaction if animals approach their boat. Public cooperation is requested to ensure the preservation of these marine species.
