Ersin Tatar expresses regret over his presidency

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar stated in a recent interview that the presidency is not an executive office and lacks the powers expected by the public. Reflecting on his political trajectory, he remarked that he might have preferred remaining as prime minister rather than running in the 2021 presidential elections. Tatar emphasized that the current system in the occupied areas is not presidential and limits his ability to meet public demands. He acknowledged that leading the National Unity Party was his most difficult political role. Regarding potential political successors, such as Tufan Erhurman, Tatar suggested they would likely face similar difficulties concerning the Cyprus issue. He further stated that peace negotiations are unlikely to restart easily based on previous frameworks. Despite his regrets, Tatar noted that if he were to run again, he would still seek victory given his experience and health status.
