Cyprus reports 780 children in state alternative care programs
The Social Welfare Services (SWS) of Cyprus announced that 780 children are currently placed in alternative care programs. This figure was confirmed by Maria Kyrantzi, Director of SWS, during the event titled 'Next to every child: Care, protection, and rights for children under state care.' The event was held in collaboration with the Commissioner for the Protection of Children's Rights and attended by Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Klea Hadjistefanou Papaellina. Stakeholders from NGOs, local authorities, and the media discussed the collective responsibility of the state and society toward these children. The initiative serves as the start of a series of actions aimed at modernizing the existing alternative care system. Deputy Minister Papaellina emphasized the importance of replacing social stigma and prejudice with understanding and inclusion. The government stated it is working methodically to ensure equal opportunities for all children regardless of their backgrounds.
