European Commission reaffirms support for the Great Sea Interconnector project
European Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen has reaffirmed the European Commission’s commitment to the Great Sea Interconnector project, designed to link the power grids of Cyprus, Greece, and Israel. The project is intended to end Cyprus’ energy isolation, improve grid stability, and reduce consumer costs. Jorgensen emphasized the strategic importance of this link for regional market integration and the expansion of renewable energy sources. Concurrently, the Commissioner addressed competing proposals for an electrical link between Cyprus and Turkey, stating that the EU does not recognize such plans. He noted that the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) has not included a Turkey-Cyprus connection in its ten-year development strategy. Jorgensen highlighted that Turkey's transmission operator, Teias, is obligated under its observer agreement to cooperate with European operators. The Commission reiterated its support for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue within the United Nations framework.
