Protests in Vienna surround the Eurovision song contest over Israeli participation
The 70th Eurovision Song Contest is facing significant controversy as it begins in Vienna, primarily due to Israel's participation amid the ongoing military conflict in Gaza. Protesters, led by director Haim Bresheeth, have organized demonstrations under slogans such as 'No platform for genocide,' calling for Israel's exclusion. Activists planned a symbolic coffin placement ceremony at Schwedenplatz, accusing Israel of using the event for propaganda purposes. In response to the participation of Israel, five countries—Ireland, Iceland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia—have boycotted the competition. This has reduced the number of participating countries to 35, the lowest participation level since 2003. Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig has condemned the disruptions, emphasizing that extensive security measures are required due to the tense atmosphere. The first semi-final is scheduled to proceed despite these challenges, with concerns regarding potential impacts on viewership.
