POED calls for dialogue with the Ministry of Education on school violence

The Cyprus Teachers' Union (POED) has requested regular meetings with the Ministry of Education to address increasing incidents of school violence and delinquency. This request follows a recent union survey of 1,017 teachers, which highlighted significant teacher burnout and feelings of insecurity. POED noted that it submitted its official positions on February 3, 2026, and a proposal for a complaint management protocol on April 22, 2026, but has not yet received a response from the ministry. The Progressive Movement of Teachers and Kindergarten Teachers argued that simply increasing disciplinary measures is insufficient. They contend that the focus should be on strengthening support structures for schools and families rather than blaming children for systemic failures. The union maintains that effective policy requires a social dialogue to address the underlying causes of behavioral difficulties. They emphasize that security in the learning environment is essential for education to function properly.
