Cyprus Church plans constitutional charter revisions
The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus is set to hold meetings from May 18 to 20 to finalize a revised Constitutional Charter. A specialized committee comprising experts in canon law and clergy members has concluded the drafting process. One of the central proposed changes involves the election process of bishops, potentially shifting to a direct election by the Holy Synod and eliminating the triprosopon procedure. Church spokespeople argue this will reduce factionalism and disputes, while also addressing legal ambiguities that have caused implementation difficulties. However, theologian Theodoros Kyriakou has publicly criticized the move, arguing that the faithful should have a voice in the process. He suggested that the draft should be published online for public comment prior to the final vote, emphasizing that the Church consists of all its members. The Synod officially confirmed the decision to restructure the charter after identifying technical difficulties in the current text.
