Cabinet approves aid package for farmers affected by foot-and-mouth disease
On May 13, 2026, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a 35.6 million euro support package for livestock farmers affected by a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. The plan includes five core measures to facilitate sector recovery. Compensation for culled animals is set at 47 to 420 euros for sheep and goats, 150 to 2,500 euros for cattle, and 35 to 5,000 euros for pigs. The government stated that these payments exceed the European Union average and do not require supporting documentation. Additional measures include 12 months of income loss coverage, a livestock reconstitution plan, and state coverage for animal feed during non-productive periods. Each affected farmer will be assigned a dedicated government official for support. Additionally, the Cabinet approved 50,000 euros in aid for fishermen in Liopetri to address local operational issues.
