Cyprus government approves €35.6 million aid for livestock farmers
On May 13, 2026, the Cypriot Council of Ministers approved a €35.6 million support package for livestock farmers affected by a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak that began in February 2026. Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou confirmed that the measures were developed with agricultural organizations to address the crisis, which expanded from an initial estimate of 39 affected units to 110. The package includes immediate compensation for culled animals, with rates per animal set at €47–€420 for sheep and goats, €150–€2,500 for cattle, and €35–€5,000 for pigs. Additional measures provide income loss support for at least 12 months, costs for animal feed during non-productive periods, and the appointment of state officials to assist individual farmers. President Nikos Christodoulides noted that this assistance exceeds European levels by 150% to 200%, though some farmers previously criticized the government's handling of the crisis and lack of direct communication. Payments will be made without requiring formal receipts to reduce bureaucratic delays. Furthermore, the cabinet approved an additional €50,000 in support for fishermen in Liopetri.
