Cyprus addresses maritime gender equality and industry priorities during EU Council Presidency

During its Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Cyprus has prioritized gender equality and strategic development within the maritime sector. Gender Equality Commissioner Josie Christodoulou addressed the High-Level Conference on Equal Opportunities and Inclusion in Shipping in Brussels, urging the industry to adopt measurable policies instead of mere declarations. Christodoulou emphasized that inclusion is essential for competitiveness, innovation, and sustainability. Concurrently, Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hadjimanolis attended the 1st Mare Forum in Chios on May 7. Hadjimanolis highlighted the need for collective action and cooperation amidst geopolitical and regulatory challenges. She noted that Cyprus advocates for a coordinated European voice within the International Maritime Organization. Additionally, the 'Nicosia Declaration' has been introduced to focus on seafarer education and the promotion of maritime careers. Both officials stressed that strengthening the human dimension is vital for the future of the global shipping industry.
