Farmers protest halloumi milk quota decree

The Coordinating Committee of the Goat and Sheep Producers Association has publicly criticized the Cypriot government regarding a new decree on halloumi production. On May 8, the Ministry of Commerce presented a proposal to adjust the minimum ratio of goat and sheep milk used in PDO halloumi production. The producers requested a 48-hour consultation window, setting a deadline of May 13 to provide their feedback. However, the ministry issued the decree, which reduces the required milk quota to 15 percent, before the deadline. The decree is set to enter into effect on May 15. The association claims the decision was made without proper consultation and considers it an act of disregard for their sector. Meanwhile, the Council of Ministers has approved a separate compensation package worth 35.6 million euros for livestock farmers. The producers' committee accused the Minister of Agriculture of tailoring policies specifically for cheese makers at the expense of farmers.
