Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar discuss expansion of defense pact
Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif announced that Turkey and Qatar are in final stage discussions to join the strategic defense agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Signed in September 2025, the original treaty functions similarly to NATO's Article 5, treating an act of aggression against one member as an attack on all. This potential expansion is occurring amidst regional instability, specifically tensions involving the United States and Iran, as well as broader geopolitical shifts. While officials frame this as a move toward collective regional security, the initiative is emerging alongside competing frameworks such as the 'Hexagon of Alliances' proposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Pakistan continues to act as a diplomatic mediator between Washington and Tehran during the ongoing regional crisis. The integration of Turkey and Qatar into the pact is viewed by Islamabad as a positive step toward creating a stronger platform for like-minded nations. Experts suggest this alliance aims to protect energy security and maritime trade routes in the Middle East and South Asia.
