Thoc concludes production of Translations by Brian Friel
The Cyprus Theatre Organization (Thoc) is concluding its production of the play Translations by Irish playwright Brian Friel. The final performance is scheduled for Friday, May 15, 2026, at the Rialto Theatre in Limassol. Directed by Patrick Myles, with translation and assistance by Andreas Tselepos, the play originally written in 1980 explores the impact of British colonial administration in 1833 Ireland. Set in a rural school in Donegal, the narrative follows a community grappling with the forced anglicization of place names and the replacement of traditional education with a national system. Friel uses this setting to examine language as a tool of power, cultural identity, and historical memory. The production highlights the tension between colonial administrative acts and local resistance. Through this artistic lens, the play depicts the displacement and cultural shifts experienced by the community during a period of radical internal and external change.
