Demolition of abandoned Pieris Estate building begins in Limassol
Demolition work has commenced on the 14-storey Pieris Estate building, located on Omonia Avenue near the Franklin Roosevelt Avenue intersection in Limassol. Construction of the building originally began in 1977, but stalled in 1986 due to the developer's bankruptcy, leaving investors seeking recovery of their funds. The structure, also referred to as the Maritime Building, has remained abandoned for decades and was recently declared a safety hazard. Authorities noted that the building had become a shelter for homeless individuals and was in a state of severe neglect. Due to the proximity of the structure to busy roads and residential areas, specialized demolition equipment was imported from abroad. Although initial reports suggested a March 2026 demolition timeline, the process is currently underway with surrounding roads cordoned off. The Limassol District Organisation (EOA) emphasized that safety was the primary factor driving the decision to demolish the derelict site.
