Cash exceeding 208,000 euros seized at Ayios Dhometios crossing

On May 13, customs officials at the Ayios Dhometios crossing point seized over 208,600 euros in cash during a routine check under the Green Line Regulation. The currency was discovered in 50 separate envelopes inside a vehicle driven by a 49-year-old Turkish Cypriot woman, accompanied by her 50-year-old husband. The confiscated funds consisted of 169,950 euros, 20,300 US dollars, 11,275 British pounds, and 435,605 Turkish lira. Authorities deemed the couple's initial explanations regarding the source and intended use of the money insufficient. According to some media reports, the pair claimed to be doctors and stated the funds originated from their professional activities. The Customs Department is currently investigating the origin of the assets. The entire sum has been held pending the outcome of these investigations.
