Iran expands territorial definition of the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has announced an expansion of its operational definition regarding the Strait of Hormuz, now classifying it as a massive strategic zone stretching from Jask in the east to Siri Island in the west. Mohammad Akbarzadeh, an official with the Revolutionary Guards Navy, stated this is the second such expansion since the conflict with the US began on February 28. Mohammad Akraminia, an army spokesperson, claimed that control over this waterway could double Iran's oil revenues and boost its international influence. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital transit route for approximately 20% of global oil supplies. Ibrahim Azizi, chairman of the National Security Committee, confirmed that a management plan for the waterway has been completed. Despite a ceasefire that went into effect on April 8, the US continues to maintain a blockade on Iranian ports. The control of this passage remains a significant point of contention in ongoing peace negotiations. Iran maintains that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps controls the western portion, while the regular navy oversees the eastern sector.
