Prosecutors seek seven-year prison sentence for Nicolas Sarkozy
French prosecutors have requested a seven-year prison sentence and a 300,000 euro fine for former President Nicolas Sarkozy. The case concerns allegations that he accepted illegal financing from the Libyan regime under Muammar Gaddafi for his 2007 presidential campaign. Prosecutor Rodolphe Jarry-Biermann described Sarkozy as the mastermind behind a criminal conspiracy designed to secure his election. Sarkozy faces multiple charges, including corruption, illegal campaign financing, and misappropriation of Libyan public funds. While the prosecution requested a sentence two years longer than a previous conviction, they did not demand an immediate arrest warrant. Nicolas Sarkozy continues to deny all allegations, stating he did not receive any funding from Libya. His legal team maintains his total innocence and plans to present their defense in the coming weeks. The trial is currently ongoing at the Court of Appeal.
