European Commission proposes new rules for integrated rail travel
The European Commission has proposed a new legislative package aimed at facilitating cross-border rail travel for European citizens. Presented by Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the initiative introduces a single-ticket system for journeys involving multiple operators and countries. Passengers will be able to search for, compare, and combine tickets from various state and private rail providers through a single transaction on their chosen platform. The proposal also mandates enhanced rights for travelers, including guaranteed assistance, compensation, or refunds in the event of delays or missed connections. This single-transaction capability is designed to remove existing technical and administrative barriers for regional and long-distance travel. Furthermore, the platform will allow users to compare routes, prices, and environmental impact. The initiative aims to improve European mobility by simplifying the planning and booking process. These measures apply to all types of rail services to ensure consistent consumer protection across the continent.
